The Carry-On Essentials I Never Fly Long-Haul Without (If You Want to Arrive Feeling Fresh)
Share
I fly long-haul at least twice a year, and after countless flights between Australia and the US, I've become a little obsessed with arriving feeling as human as possible.
I've experimented with everything—freshening up after landing, waiting until the hotel, even trying to ignore that grimy "I'll deal with it later" feeling. Trust me, doing it before you land wins every time.
A long-haul flight doesn't have to end with you stepping off the plane feeling exhausted and desperately in need of a shower.
With a little planning, you can arrive feeling comfortable, confident and ready to start your trip straight away—whether that's heading to a work meeting, exploring a new city or meeting friends at the airport.
Here's everything I pack in my carry-on to make that happen.
1. A Fresh Change of Underwear
This is hands down the most underrated travel essential.
After 10–15 hours sitting on a plane, changing into a fresh pair of underwear makes an incredible difference to how you feel (and smell!).
Instead of waiting until you reach your hotel—which could be hours away depending on immigration, baggage claim and check-in—I change about an hour before landing.
This is exactly why I created Roamies. Their discreet side snaps let you change into a fresh pair without removing your pants or shoes, making them perfect for cramped airplane bathrooms with questionable floors.
2. Something to Cleanse Your Face
Whether you wear makeup on a travel day is completely up to you.
Either way, you'll probably want to freshen your face before you land.
Face wipes, a small face towel or a hypochlorous acid spray all work beautifully. Personally, I'm obsessed with hypochlorous acid spray. It instantly makes me feel clean and awake—better than a cup of coffee.
3. Moisturiser & Lip Balm
Cabin air is incredibly dry.
Applying moisturiser before take-off and again before landing helps combat that tight, dehydrated feeling and leaves your skin looking much fresher.
Confession: I even dab a tiny bit of Aquaphor just inside my nose before I go to sleep on the plane. It stops that awful dry, irritated feeling I always get after a long flight.
4. A Five-Minute Makeup Routine
For some of us (me included), a tiny bit of makeup helps us feel ready to take on the day. I've built an express makeup application using travel sized products in as few steps as possible.
-
Travel-sized concealer
-
Cream bronzer and blush duo
-
Travel-sized mascara
-
Aquaphor for lips (which also doubles as eyebrow gel)
It's minimal but makes me feel so much more put together.
5. Toothbrush & Travel Toothpaste
This one is non-negotiable.
Brushing your teeth before landing is probably the quickest way to feel like yourself again.
A foldable toothbrush and mini toothpaste take up almost no room but make a huge difference.
6. Deodorant
Fresh underarms. Fresh outfit. Fresh underwear.
Need I say more?
I usually give my underarms a quick wipe first before reapplying deodorant, especially after sleeping on the plane.
7. Honourable Mentions
The foundations of landing fresh need to be laid throughout the entire flight. Don't forget a refillable water bottle, compression socks, and a neck pillow. What you wear is important too - which I will dive deeper on HERE.
My Three-Minute Fresh Arrival Routine
About an hour before landing, this is exactly what I do:
-
Head to the bathroom before everyone else gets the same idea.
-
Change into a fresh pair of Roamies.
-
Brush my teeth.
-
Cleanse my face and reapply moisturiser.
-
Express makeup application (if I'm wearing any).
-
Freshen my underarms and reapply deodorant.
The whole routine takes about three minutes, and I promise it completely changes how you feel when you step off the plane.
Why I Always Freshen Up Before Landing
I've tried waiting until after I land.
Never again.
The moment the plane touches down, everyone is racing through immigration and customs.
Sure, you could stop at the airport bathroom—but every minute you spend there is another hundred people joining the customs queue.
Then comes baggage claim.
And once you're dragging a suitcase (or two) around the airport, the last thing you'll feel like doing is hunting for another bathroom to freshen up.
Don't assume another time will come. Your best opportunity is while you're still on the plane.
By the time you walk through the arrivals gate, you'll already feel refreshed and ready to start your trip.
Arrive Ready for Anything
Long-haul travel will probably always be tiring.
But it doesn't have to leave you feeling like a shell of yourself.
Packing a few thoughtful essentials means you'll land feeling cleaner, more comfortable and ready to enjoy the first day of your trip instead of spending it recovering from the flight.
Because your holiday should start when the plane lands—not after the hotel shower.
